Slick Rick

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

Despite numerous setbacks, Slick Rick is still the Ruler. The Bronx-via-Britain resident has kept things fresh since the late ’80s, releasing classic tracks like “La-Di-Da-Di,” “Mona Lisa,” and “Children’s Story” as well as collaborating with hip-hop luminaries like Nas, Raekwon, and Snoop Dogg. Recently pardoned by Governor David Paterson over immigration issues stemming from his previous arrests, tonight’s performance finds Rick with new material and support from a full live band — but he’s sure to lean heavily on the classics. Throwback rappers the Retro Kidz open, bringing good vibes and high-top fades to the party.

The Hackensaw Boys

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

Reclaiming Americana for folks who hail from “real America,” Charlottesville, Virginia collective the Hackensaw Boys reinvent bluegrass, infusing traditional Appalachia tropes with a punk-rock edge. The band’s raucous, liquor-fueled interpretations have earned them opening slots alongside acts as diverse as Camper Van Beethoven, the Flaming Lips, and Modest Mouse. The latter liked the band so much that it recruited Hackensaw Boys founding member Tom Peloso in 2007. Peloso contributed two songs to the Hackensaw Boys’ latest album and continues to perform on occasion, further bolstering their indie and country cred.

Kenneth Pattengale & the Found Object Orchestra

Monday, November 17th, 2008

California son Kenneth Pattengale’s sense of frontier musicianship is at once evocative of Tom Waits and the tumbleweed troubadours of the American West. That’s not to say his songs are simple: they fuse elements of folk, blues, and jazz for a sound that’s straight, old-school Americana. Pattengale takes the Hotel Café stage tonight behind his sixth studio record, Storied Places. His friends from the Found Object Orchestra are also on board, fleshing out his repertoire with clarinet, sax, upright bass, and a little bit of the kitchen sink.

When
Friday Nov 21 (10–11pm)

Where
The Hotel Café (1623 1/2 N Cahuenga Blvd)

Let’s Independent

Monday, November 17th, 2008

Radio Free Silverlake rings in the end of an era this week, flipping the page on its tremendously successful Let’s Independent series. A weekly indie-scene celebration, the showcase has hosted scores of local favorites and buzz-worthy up-and-comers. As you’d expect, it’s going out with a bang, hosting divinely dramatic Automatic Drawing, the addictive and curiously quirky Pizza!, and toe-tappers Broken Remotes. Tuesdays at Boardner’s will never be the same, but don’t fret, friends: the folks at Radio Free Silverlake have promised bigger and better bashes to come.

When
Tuesday Nov 18 (9:30pm)

Where
Boardner’s (1652 N Cherokee Ave)
